The University of Ghana is inviting dynamic, versatile and suitably-qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Librarian in the University of Ghana Library System.
POSITIONASSISTANT LIBRARIAN
REPORTING TO: UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN THROUGH THE HEAD OF UNIT
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA LIBRARY SYSTEM:
The University of Ghana Library System (UGLS) comprises the Balme Library and other libraries in the various Schools, Institutes, Departments, Halls of Residence and the Accra City Campus. The collection of UGLS consists of both electronic and print resources and provides essential background reading for the courses taught in the University of Ghana.
Products include reference materials, textbooks, e-books and online databases. Services provided are printing, binding, photocopying, online chat and library instruction. Facilities include the 24-hour reading rooms, Research Commons (RC), Knowledge Commons (KC) and networked environments with computers.
UGLS is dynamic and continues to adapt to changing technologies and patron information needs.

QUALIFICATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Applicants should possess a good first degree and an MPhil in Library Studies/  MPhil in Information Studies or their equivalent from a recognised institution, with a minimum of two (2) years relevant post-qualification work experience
  • Membership of a professional Library Association/Ghana Library Association or willingness to join a professional association is required
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite and IT packages including databases, library management system would be an advantage
  • Candidates must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills, qualities of a team player and the ability to establish understanding and rapport with colleagues

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the Unit Head, the Assistant Librarian will assist to carry out the day to day operations of the Library to patrons and ensure that all decisions and actions comply with the relevant legislation, policies and procedures. Duties include:

  • Promoting Library Resources to patrons.
  • Providing Library Instruction and Information Literacy training.
  • Use of relevant software to engage students and faculty to improve teaching and learning.
  • Provision of research support to academic departments.
  • Contribution to the profession through research and publishing as well as extension activities.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.
