A little background information
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join one of the continent’s most promising urban data analytics firms. This role is based in our vibrant but tranquil shared office space. You will be joining the company in a period of growth as we near the launch version 1.0 of our updated platform and hence our need for even more resources to help showcase our talents to the world.

In this key role, after an initial acclimatisation period, you’ll have the opportunity to further hone and demonstrate your web development skills, whilst building a dynamic database driven website. You will help to optimise the company’s development environment whilst working closely with both the back and front-end development teams. As it’s a start-up, from day one you’ll be considered a key member of the team, and you’ll be in a role where your opinion always matters and your innovation always rewarded. You’ll also be involved in all aspects of the product development lifecycle. In addition, there will also be a training budget to facilitate your growth journey.
Are you the person we’re looking for?
As a Full-Stack CTO, you will be responsible for developing the right scalable, available and cost-effective and adaptable systems environment to host our platform. Additionally, you will primarily responsible for overseeing and optimising the delivery of the developing the back-end of our websites, in addition to maintaining the currency and adaptability of our front-end codebase for use by the public and our clients. You will also be responsible for debugging problems and offering critical guidance support to other members of the team. All whilst ensuring smooth integration of existing libraries and command line utilities.
As a minimum, we need people who have:

  • Experience of both PHP (within the Laravel framework) and Python, with a solid knowledge of object oriented programming written in enterprise-class reusable, testable, and efficient JavaScript preferably within the View Framework;
  • Some experience with the MVC framework (preferably Laravel);
  • World beating SQL skills, including database design, development and optimisation;
  • some familiarity with and/or a working knowledge of front-end technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery;
  • World class recent experience of development working with the Windows Command Line Interface;
  • Understanding of Bash Scripting and its applicability;
  • Working knowledge of windows server shell commands;
  • Experience of writing scalable presentation-server code with associated server API tests and the documentation specific to developed APIs and component implementations.
  • Worked collaboratively with other systems architects and development engineers within a test-driven culture to deploy solutions on AWS;
  • Experience managing and properly documenting support issues related to the applications owned by the wider web development team;
  • Knowledge of how to monitor alerts server storage/capacity, application health and benchmark infrastructure performance to keep track of problems proactively;
  • The ability to create and modify (as needed) system configurations and create templates to reliably deploy applications;
  • Detailed understanding of AWS systems implementation and integration with Walulel’s technologies, policies, procedures necessary to be able to lead and guide other developers;
  • A proven record of researching, recommending, and following best practices for AWS-based solutions; and
  • Previous experience of being a leader on data/service migration schemes, and monitoring and managing costs

 
What else would be good?

  • Bachelors/Masters level (or higher) degree in Computer Science (or a similar/related field);
  • Extensive hands-on development experience with a viewable portfolio;
  • Knowledge of source control systems, such as Mercurial and/or GIT;
  • Leadership/Management of working with other scalable hosted solutions; and
  • Leadership/Management experience of working on mobile and/or responsive web projects.
  • Extensive hands-on DevOps experience;
  • Knowledge of source control systems, such as Mercurial and/or GIT;
  • Intimate knowledge and experience of working with, EC2 instances, S3, Cloud Front and Route 53, VPCs and Subnets;
  • Experience of working on mobile and/or responsive web projects;
  • Tangible evidence of a commitment to “Kaizen”.
