Grading is important in every educational institution as it helps to rank the students and determine how each performs at the end of the study period. University Of Education Winneba, UEW new grading system has been set to rank the students graduating from the university in this academic year. It is this set system that gives a first class to one student, a second class upper, lower or pass to another.

UEW  STUDENT ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT  :       40%
END-OF-SEMESTER EXAMINATION: 60%
The Continuous Assessment component consists of take-home assignment, class quizzes and tests, term papers, and project work. This component gives students the chance to demonstrate their abilities on a wider variety of learning tasks and a broader variety of work environments than is possible under formal examination conditions. For example, through Continuous Assessment students can learn the values and processes of teamwork, plan and solve real-life problems.
Duration of End-of-Semester Examination
The duration of end-of-semester examination is determined by the credit weighting of the course; the pattern is as follows:

CREDIT WEIGHTING DURATION OF EXAMINATION
One-Credit Course 1 – 1.5 hours
Two-Credit Course 1.5 – 2 hours
Three-Credit Course 2 – 3 hours

UEW GRADING SYSTEM

The University uses letter grades and numerical weightings corresponding to the letter grades. The numerical weightings reflect the quality of performance. Total numerical weightings reflect the quality of performance. Total raw scores ( combination of continuous assessment and end-of-semester examination) are converted according to the following scheme:

80 – 100 A 4.0 Excellent
75 – 79 B+ 3.5 Very Good
70 – 74 B 3.0 Good
65 – 69 C+ 2.5 Average
60 – 64 C 2.0 Fair
55 -59 D+ 1.5 Barely Satisfactory
50 – 54 D 1.0 Weak Pass
0-49 E 0 Fail

HOW TO CALCULATE GPA FOR UEW

To calculate your GPA, divide the sum of total CREDIT VALUE by the sum of total CREDIT HOURS for that particular semester.

  • GPAs are semester specific
  • GPA= Total GPT/Total Credit

HOW TO CALCULATE CGPA FOR UEW

This is for the total semesters a student has taken examinations at the university.
• All levels carry equal weight
• CGPA= Total GPTs of all courses taken/ Total Number of Credits of all courses taken
• Assuming you’ve taken an examination in Level 400 second semester, the GPTs and Credits will be calculated from L100 first and second semesters, L200 first and second semesters, L300 first and second semesters and L400 first and second semesters.

UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION WINNEBA, UEW DEGREE CLASSIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degrees are classified according to the candidate’s Cumulative Grade Average (C.G.P.A). The Degree Classification are as follows:

CLASS DESIGNATION C.G.P.A
FIRST CLASS 3.6 – 4.0
SECOND CLASS (UPPER DIVISION) 3.0 – 3.5
SECOND CLASS (LOWER DIVISION) 2.5 – 2.9
THIRD CLASS DIVISION 2.0 – 2.4
PASS 1.0 – 1.9
FAIL < 1.0

UEW Requirements for Graduation

Candidates for a degree must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Pass all compulsory core courses – general, faculty, or departmental compulsory core courses;
  2. Meet Inter-faculty course requirements;
  3. Accumulate a minimum of 120 credits (Including Advanced Credits);
  4. Attain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A) of 1.0;
  5. Settle all financial and other obligation to the University;
  6. The student should be in good standing, not barred for disciplinary reasons.

Time Limits for the Completion of Programmes
The time limits for the completion of programmes are as follows:

  1. Four-year programme: Minimum of 4 years, maximum 5 years;
  2. Three-year programme: Minimum of 3 years, maximum 4 years;
  3. Two-year programme: Minimum of 2 years, maximum of 3 years.
